Aging’s “Black is Beautiful” moment is here.
plus:
  • Sales & enrollment field tactics
  • SEO for marketers
  • Creative inspiration
  • Senior care
  • Demographics
10 years ago, there were no stories about aging in the news. Today, aging stories are everywhere.
Boston has its Age Strong campaign. San Francisco launched End Ageism. These are not meek public service announcements but bold campaigns, with serious budgets.
The message: We are all aging together. Prejudice against elders is prejudice against our future self.
I feel as if we are in the moment of recognizing people’s beauty and power. This reminds me of the Black is Beautiful movement of the 1960s. Today, culture is starting to recognize the beauty and value of age.
Note, I *never* equate ageism with racism, they are unequal and the consequences of ageism are benign compared to the consequences racism. Nor do I feel that ageism is the “last -ism.”
Who knows, maybe in 1-2 generations our society will be post-ageist….when there is no stigma to frailty…when the oldest old are not diminished or marginalized. The momentum is here!
Warmest wishes, Lisa
